Last spring, they released the 3D Buildings layer which allows Earth viewers to experience the world in (almost) full 3D. At the time, New York City was the showpiece, with about 80% of the buildings in Manhattan built using an automated (and magically wonderful) process. Fastforward to today, and dozens of other cities, or their downtown cores have been autobuilt, including our very own Vancouver. However, there’s always room for improvement, and that’s where the 3D Warehouse comes in.

I recently became hooked on playing with Google Sketchup, Google’s own 3D software. The interface and tools are so intuitive it’s hard not to get drawn in. I’ve already built a number of structures in the Surrey/Delta area (figuring it’ll take a while, if ever, for the google autobuilders to reach the ‘burbs), and I must say, the push/pull tool is certainly the best. Need a cube? Sorry, there’s no cube tool, but why not just draw a rectangle and pull/extract it into a cube? What makes this so much better than similar tools in other programs, is the crazy amount of snapping/automatic guides that show up to help the models stay accurate. Of course there’s also a measuring tool which helps, but that merely complements the snapping/guides.

View/download my model of Station Tower and the Cornerstone towers.

Once completed, users can upload their model replicas to the Google 3D Warehouse, where other users can download them, or they can be submitted for approval to appear in the 3D Buildings layer of Google Earth.

If you’re interested in trying it for yourself, hit http://sketchup.google.com or if you just want to see what other people have done, you can browse the 3D Warehouse at http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse. There’s also a 3D Warehouse Network Link you can download to Google Earth, so even if some buildings don’t show up in the 3D Buildings layer, you can still find them!

For my models, I only use phototextures rather than stock material textures. They help blend the buildings into the environment better, and really increase the realism. I think the term Google has used to refer to this kind of modeling is georeference modeling – modeling real structures, using the correct geographical and visual information that is available (even if available means getting out and taking pictures to use as homemade textures). It also means I try to keep them as simple as possible to make sure loading isn’t a problem – it’s all in finding the right balance between too much detail, and not enough.

At this point, I’m anything but finished with SketchUp. I figure if I can model the main commercial centers and buildings taller than 10 stories in all of Surrey and Delta, I’ll be satisfied. Central City will, of course, be my pièce de résistance.. that thing is anything but simple, but then I’ve never been one to back away from a challenge!

Now if it had been any other weekend, that would have sounded absurd, as those two communities are separated north-south by the great Fraser River. However, June 14th, 2009 was the pedestrian-only Opening Celebration for the new Golden Ears Bridge, which connects Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge on the north, to Surrey and the Township of Langley on the south, along the 200th St. corridor. The bridge replaces the Albion Ferry service, a few kilometers upstream.

The ferry service, which linked the communities of Albion and Fort Langley, began operating in 1957, and offered a free trip for up to 24 cars at a time, every 15 minutes. Averaging 80 trips a day, it was not uncommon to have waits of 4, 5, even up to 8 sailings – a huge amount of time to wait, considering the ride itself was less than 7 minutes.

Enter the Golden Ears Bridge, named after the landmark mountain peaks in the Golden Ears Provincial Park north of the Fraser. Construction began in 2006 for a project that included the 1km bridge span, 12.3kms of 2, 4, and 6-lane mainline roadway, 5kms of off- and on-ramps, 12kms of municipal street upgrades, and 2kms of modifications to existing highway infrastructure. It is certainly more than ‘just a bridge’.

The Completion Celebration that occurred last Sunday was a fantastic opportunity to get a close look at the bridge, and the views it afforded. Organized by Translink, the regional transportation authority and owner of the new bridge, the event anticipated a crowd of 30,000 people. Unfortunately, 50,000 visitors later, the deck had to be closed off at the entrances until some of them left. The total estimate for the day is in the 60,000 range, showing just how excited people were to see the bridge, and enjoy the events that were scheduled for the day.

The events began at 8:30am with a foot race from one end of the bridge to the other, with a bike-pedaling George Tabert, the local pastor who suggested the Golden Ears name, leading the way. Afterwards, crews got to work finishing setting up the 3 stages and event tents. Visitors, traveling from parking areas on the north and south via free Translink shuttles, or walking up the circular pedestrian ramps, were allowed onto the deck at 11am. Concerts and performances took place throughout the day, including a Capoeira performance by Aché Brasil, routines by Blues Brothers too, and Bhangra dancing courtesy of the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration.

Volunteers were stationed across the bridge to let visitors ‘cut the ribbon’ and collect ‘i made history’ passport stamps. Classic cars from local car clubs were displayed across the bridge, and a number of vendors provided cool treats, hot dogs, and bottled water. Later in the afternoon, visitors could win collectable ‘I Made History’ buttons by doing their best dance or hula-hoop. The atmosphere was completely festive, and was comparable to a day at the PNE, or Cloverdale Rodeo.

By 1pm the crowd had assembled to witness the official ribbon cutting ceremony on the north stage. BC Premiere Gordon Campbell talked about the great things happening in BC, and representatives from each of the connected communities touched briefly on the significance of the bridge. Translink also had a few words to say, as well as the Golden Ears Project Manager. Before cutting the ribbon, the ceremony was blessed by a member of the local Katzie first nations.

At a cost of $808 Million, the bridge is the first in Western Canada to utilize electronic tolling – cameras and sensors record the type of vehicle, and front and back license plates as it drives across. For drivers who will be using the bridge on a frequent basis, a transponder can be leased, which will provide cheaper toll rates, however none of the rates match the free Albion service.

This fact is not lost on the many people who take the ferry – the final sailing is planned for July 31, 2009. Many are still against the toll, pointing out the fact that the free alternative will no longer be available, while others are against the Gateway transportation project in general. They voiced their opinions on the bridge, along with other groups rallying groups.

I personally am very happy to say ‘I Made History’ on the Golden Ears Bridge that day, and was glad to see my sister and nephew show up to have a look. Some have criticized an apparent lack of planning for the event, which were perhaps visible when the crowds became too thick during the ribbon cutting, and people were asked to wait before walking onto the bridge deck. However, for such a highly-publicized, and well-attended, historic, community event, the number of problems (crowding, a few people fainting, and a pregnant woman having contractions) were really insignificant.

Kudos to Translink for a great celebration, and a beautiful new bridge!

If you’d like to see it for yourself, follow the Golden Ears signs at the 176th or 200th street exits on the Transcanada Highway (hwy1) south of the Fraser, or take the Golden Ears Way exit off the Lougheed Highway north of the Fraser (map here). If you’re taking Transit, the new 595 route travels between Langley Centre and Haney Place, stopping at the Walnut Grove Park & Ride and the Maple Meadows WCE Station.

With all the beautiful sunshine and summer weather, it was hard to keep myself at the desk However, last night I finally found some time to process the images I captured of the Open House at the Vancouver Convention Centre | West Building, which opened to the public on April 4th and 5th, 2009. I took them, intending to write up a post shortly thereafter, but that didn’t happen.. until now!

As a bit of background, the new Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre was built as an addition to the existing centre, Canada Place, which was completed just prior to the 1986 World’s Fair, Expo86. Since then, it has held thousands of conventions and exhibitions, and has welcomed millions of cruise ship passengers to our fine city. When Vancouver won the 2010 Winter Olympic bid, it was time to get to work on an addition, with a focus on sustainable practices, and a desire to complement the existing centre.

Designed by Seattle-based LMN Architects, in association with MCM Partnership and DA Architects and Planners (who partnered back in the 80’s to design the iconic ’sail’ roof structure of Canada Place), the West Building plans called for a massive infill on the shores of Coal Harbour – 40% of the building would be built on what was, at the time, nothing more than a bunch of rocks and silt meters under the water. Construction began in 2004, and after a few years, the new peninsula was finally complete, and the building started to grow.

Tripling the conference and exhibition space in the complex, the new Vancouver Convention Centre was built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification standards, and is designated a Powersmart Convention Centre by BC Hydro. The most visible environmentally-friendly feature is the massive six-acre green ‘living roof’, maintained by Holland Landscapers and PWL Partnership, which provides a place for over 400,000 various indigenous plants, along with all the insects and wildlife that discover them (there are even a few bee hives to keep it all going). In addition, the building features a fish habitat built right into the foundations, seawater heating and cooling (similar to Canada Place), grey and black water recycling, and on-site water treatment.

The new VCC building, also referred to as the West Building to differentiate it from the East Building at Canada Place, is surrounded in floor-to-ceiling glass, offering breathtaking views of downtown, Coal Harbour, Burrard Inlet, and the North Shore mountains. The interior walls were inspired by stacks of lumber, which have been a common sight since the birth of the city – the locally-harvested Hemlock boards were assembled into panels by machine. The lighting and other design elements contribute to the festive atmosphere and all work together to complement the interior and exterior views.

Coming in at just under $900 million, the expansion was an estimated 4 hundred million dollars over budget, and proved to be a touchy subject for the politically-minded. The rapid cost increase of an economic slowdown, and the requirement of extra pilings sometime into construction are the key factors. However, it’s difficult to argue the elegance of the structure, and the sheer fact that this building – 1.1 million square feet of space, and the size of 4 city blocks – blends into the waterfront so seamlessly it risks going unnoticed. Magic, I tell you!

Connecting with Canada Place to the east, and surrounded by a continuation of the Seawall (a continuous waterfront recreational path stretching from Coal Harbour all the way around the coastline to Spanish Banks), the new Vancouver Convention Centre Expansion Project included the creation of Thurlow Plaza, to the west of the centre. If you’re looking for an un-obscured view of the mountains on the North Shore, this is the place. It’s one of the largest outdoor public spaces in the city, and a great spot to visit at night when the walls inside the convention centre glow, and the lights sparkle across the water and on top of Grouse Mountain. It also provides a pretty good vantage point to see the lights of downtown, including the long green-blue strip on Shaw Tower.

When 2010 arrives and the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games come to town, the centre will be host to the International Broadcast Center, inviting an estimated 7,000 broadcasters to cover the Games. Afterwards, a number of public art pieces are said to be installed, and the retail spaces along the seawall will be open to businesses. Can’t wait to grab a coffee on a patio overlooking the harbour.

I wasn’t sure about the building during construction. I couldn’t help but draw comparisons to late-70s spaceship designs, but now that it’s complete, I’ve been won over. Already, I’ve made sure to mention to any visiting friends that this is not a sight to miss. Vancouver through and through, the new Vancouver Convention Centre is an outstanding achievement.

Seeing as how I only had 2 posts since last Friday’s Tube Debris, I’ve decided it won’t be a weekly feature. It would be video overload! I do, however, have a few videos to share this week. They’re wonderfully random, and at least mildly entertaining. The one above looks into the process of creating ‘grease art’ (”your window to weight gain!”). Others follow.

(Above) Do you ever feel the need to vent your frustrations, but you’re stuck in a library or similar public space? Well worry no longer, just scream into your ScreamBody and let ‘er loose! (you may want to turn down the volume)

(Below) ‘Cause what’s the internet without a good Star Trek mashup? Awkward silences and sexual situations! Outer Space! Explosions!

(Above) Next, with so many viral LED animation clips going around (the most recent being that sheep herd), here’s just another that was made for Honda. The best part is watching the sun slowly rise in the background.

(Below) And then to offset all that light pollution from the video above, here’s a reminder that tomorrow night is Earth Hour! Humans got by for thousands of years without electricity, so what’s 1 day of the year? Turn off your lights, unplug your appliances, shut down and unplug the computer, and take an hour to appreciate the wonders of the natural world. Unless it rains (which may happen), I’m planning on hitting the lawn outside an un-lit Science World at the eastern edge of False Creek for a picnic dinner in the dark with friends. Anyone and everyone is invited to come along and enjoy the view of a (hopefully) light-free downtown!

If you’re not on twitter, you likely know someone who is.. and you’ve likely been confused as to why that someone uses twitter. Well here’s the video for you.
@rbostyle just posted an entry about twitter on his blog!!!

I joined twitter over a year ago now, after a few months of thinking that it was sort of pointless… why would anyone care to receive random updates about my life? That is, until I realized it could be a great way to connect with people that I wouldn’t normally communicate with. Then when I found out that tons of other new media types were on it, posting links to the latest industry stories, videos, events, and general interesting tidbits, I started to see some merit in it.

Now I love twitter! I look forward to hearing what all my twitter friends have to say each day, and most of it I find really helpful. I can learn about the latest news story in town hours, days, or even weeks before it shows up in the local papers or newscasts. I can find new contacts in my industry to get to know and talk geeky with. And I can even show support for local businesses, like the awesome work @VancouverOpera is doing to bring Opera to the people!

As far as my own posts go, I try to post tweets that are helpful. You won’t hear me tweeting about my deepest thoughts, the colour of shirt I’m wearing, or my bathroom activities.. if I don’t find it useful, I’m not going to share it, because you won’t want to read it! In fact, unlike blogs or most other forms of publication, your twitter followers don’t penalize you for infrequent updates.. I’d venture to say the opposite is true. Followers drop if they feel they’re getting spammed. So I try not to post too many times a day, because anyone who uses twitter knows how frustrating it can be to have your entire feed spammed by one or two people, whether they’re useful tweets or not. Moral of the story; if I don’t have anything useful to say, I just wait until I do.

That’s my experience with twitter, but what about yours?
Do you use twitter? Why or why not?

Tired of waiting for Google to deliver on their promise to bring Street View to Canadian streets? Wait no longer! Well, unless of course you really want Google to do it. But if you’re fine letting a local company do the same thing, with fullscreen capabilities, extremely high res photos, and even a body cam to capture the pedestrian-only areas (i.e. around Whistler), then you’re in luck! Canpages has developed a Street View add-on to Google Maps, and they’ve already covered many of the popular areas around Metro Vancouver and beyond!

To make a good thing even better, the maps still display great business listings so you can find what you’re looking for whether it’s the nearest laundromat, or a new restaurant for date-night dinner – only rather than seeing it like a big tack on a map, you can now take a look from street level to find exactly where it is, and what it looks like. This a super fun and enjoyable process too, especially using the fullscreen mode (pictured above) which offers options to adjust image brightness, sharpness, projection/angle, to zoom in/out, and more.

In addition to these features, the app also has a very easy to use interface. Click on or near any of the blue lines on the map, and you’ll be taken to a street view of the nearest recorded street. From there, you can drag the blue view cone of the street view icon guy and the image will adjust in realtime to face whichever direction you choose.

Similarly to the Google Street View, you can also nudge your way along a street by clicking the blue dots (the closest pad will take you to the next photo, but you can reach ahead a few pads to jump a little further). Maybe a cyber trip down to English Bay will tickle your fancy?

Another great thing about the Canpages Street View is the coverage they already have online. Rather than being limited to the downtown core, the system reaches into Stanley Park, around Vancouver, out to the airport in Richmond, up to SFU on Burnaby Mountain, even to downtown New Westminster, where condominium projects are still barreling along. (and don’t forget Whistler!)

With such an easy to use interface, high quality images, and integration with the Canpages listings, I definitely suggest checking it out if you have a few extra minutes this weekend. Simply head over to Canpages.ca, enter in a category of business you’re looking for, and browse the streetscapes of Metro Vancouver to your heart’s content!

(please note this site is, in fact, not canpages, so searching for your street on my blog won’t give you any results)
Plus it’s Friday, so what better way to round out the work week with some laughs and good times?

Firstly there’s a new video from ohhello.tv for Microsoft (in addition to the one we all saw a couple weeks ago). This time, the clip is much longer, more detailed, and.. beautiful. If only Microsoft was doing this sort of work right now, rather than in a future yet to be determined… MS Sustainability

Up next, a clip of that volcanic eruption off the coast of Tonga in the South Pacific. The eruption, which was likely related to a 7.9 degree earthquake the following day, sent ash, smoke, and steam “thousands of feet” into the sky.

This is followed by some completely wicked hula hooping set to In Step, by @FrankMusik (As far as the outfit goes, if you pretend she’s a super hero, or getting her hula on at the beach, it’s all good!). While you’re checking him out, be sure to give Better Off As Two a watch/listen.

After that wonderfulness, get ready to gaze in horror as hundreds of wannabe Top Models stampede and fight their way through the mob, trying to escape what they thought to be a bomb. I can’t help but feel for the gals in the center, running back and forth, unsure as to which side is safer… In related news, cars overheat sometimes.

Then we have the Subway Art Gallery Opening from Improv Everywhere, and I have to confess, if we did something like this in Vancouver I’d be all over it. I love the performance pieces, especially the regularly scheduled one at the end. It’d get my red sticker too.

And then to round out the inaugural Friday Tube Debris, there’s a short clip of US President Barack Obama on the Tonight Show with Leno (the first time a sitting US president did such a thing) where he refers to his bowling skills as being “like the Special Olympics or something”. Oh Obama, even you have your moments.

If you’ve seen any cool videos recently, throw down a comment and let me know, or send @rbostyle a nudge on twitter!

After hearing about a 2 for 1 discount for the final Rigoletto performance, I decided it was time for my first opera. I’d always been interested in seeing one, and this invitation, which included access to the VIP salon before the opera and during the intermission, along with an introduction to Rigoletto by David Adams, the locally-born Assistant Director, was too great an opportunity to miss.

We found our seats, and the house lights soon began to dim. The stage, obscured by the grid of a large metal curtain illuminated from above, remained still as the orchestra came to life. Then slowly, characters began to reveal themselves. An odd collection, circus-like in their costumes and mannerisms. A woman on the trapeze, and a man on stilts- some 4 ft high. Red lights, yellow lights, bright white, and deep blue.. The set, a great cage elevated 8ft above the stage, contained the spectacle and presented it for all to see. It was a modern take on a traditional opera – a different interpretation, allowing an old story to reach a new audience. Here is my prize, it said. You may watch, but you mustn’t touch, for the players are dangerous, and the consequences tragic.

Lights faded in and out, from the left and from the right, and jesters, quiet and steady, animated props with practiced precision. A solitary soprano, perched atop a crescent moon, reached out for her love. Eglise Gutierrez, as Gilda, sang sweeter than any songbird ever could. Her voice, rich and pure, spoke to the soul as her melodies dipped, jumped, and soared to every seat in the house. Darkness, and a deserved ovation led us to intermission.

Vancouver Opera was happy to greet us again as we entered the salon to enjoy assorted desserts and opinions. I gave my take on the performance in an impromptu interview, comparing Rigoletto to The Phantom (does that count as blasphemy?) Regardless, the clip is on youtube, so I’ll let you be the judge.

In no time, the bells rang and the show continued. Alterations to the set helped to ensure the cage didn’t grow tiresome, and the musical delights only got better. By the end, I was positive that I had made a good decision in coming to see Rigoletto. The tragic, and abrupt ending, was so unexpected in a world where big screen movies drag on and on, or conclude with all loose ends tied up nicely.

This, along with the evident popularity of the event, is perhaps a sign that Opera may well be on the rise… If they continue to reach out to a younger generation, perhaps someday we’ll hear about Gutierrez, or Eichelberger, or Bruce Sledge, or Donnie Ray Albert, on entertainment blogs. Why bother with Jennifer Aniston, when there are people with such incredible talent just waiting to be seen?

Or perhaps that’s the thrill of the opera: mystery, intrigue, drama, and emotion… transcendent joy, and unexpected sorrow.. never twice the same, and always dependent on the viewer’s perception.

For future entries, my aim is to continue with the visually descriptive text to support my own memory of events and moments in my life, however I’ll also try to incorporate more Vancouver-specific news, events, and updates (And although I have a huge archive of photos from the past year that I’ve barely even touched, I’ll try to stick to new content!)

When I was a little boy, I didn’t know what to make of the future. Future to me was moving up a grade and into a fresh desk in a new classroom with an unfamiliar teacher. Another new box of pencil crayons of varying lengths, assembled from the leftovers of years past. The new year would last an eternity, until at last, summer arrived, and then passed, and a new adventure began. So it was through elementary school. And through secondary school. University came, and the future suddenly grew more complex. For once, school would not be followed by school. Without a vision of the years ahead, I worried. I left, I worked for a year, and I returned. I studied other options, and I returned to the program in which I first enrolled. I worked hard, all the while wondering what I was really working towards. Experience it, they said. Learn while you can, and don’t just go for the degree.

A family was not on the horizon, nor even a spouse. A career of undetermined nature was skeptically anticipated, with much fear of failure. Technological advances were unknown, societal changes unimagined, and familial relationships questioned. With a future that felt as though it wouldn’t even exist, what was I to think? How does a person act when it seems that the choices and decisions of the present will hold no impact on the events in times to come? … if there even is a time to come.

When we had settled and completed the first tour, we descended into the Circus Maximus. Once a grand stadium, lined with statues and spectators, now nothing more than a grassy field; a large embankment on one side, a hill topped with ruins on the other. We revealed a frisbee, tattered and worn, it’s white surface marked with the scars of countless wayward landings. Across the circle it flew; to one side.. then to the other. Hand, fingertip, air. The waltz of the frisbee: A catch, a step, a spin, a arc of the wrist, another successful flight. We were carefree. The history by which we were surrounded embraced our dance, and we had no concern for the future. We were children of a new age, playing the part we were meant to play.

For everything I experienced, and everything that may be yet to come, this is what I will remember. The simplicity of centuries playing as one.

The future I hadn’t known in my youth was planned to be ill-defined. It was meant to be pursued… to be sought out, to be discovered. A simple act would reveal the present step, and no more. A white ghost floating through the Roman sky. It was made to fly, to be caught, and to be set free once more.

So shall it be with me.
